Who do you paint for?

I paint for myself, family, friends and photographers. I got started painting for other photographers by researching Photoshop and the things I had to know for my own business, like retouching and fixing photos for clients. This lead me to other forums that lead me to painting forums. I also really enjoy making art from photographs.

What's in your painting bag?

Adobe Photoshop & Corel Painter X. Photoshop is essential in my photography business, so in the beginning I started painting in Photoshop using the smudge tool. Photoshop is where I can create the really smooth look and when I want to "muck up" a painting I do it in Painter. However, I have the hardest time getting messy; I tend to be a perfectionist and want every pixel painted perfectly.

Education:

My education in art began about 25 years ago. I took a few commercial art classes along with art history and really excelled. I always remembered loving art and drawing. More recently, I was able to expand on this knowledge by purchasing numerous DVD's on photography and art and also by taking online painting classes and webinars. I have spent hours painting and would have to say it is my passion.

What artists do you admire? Then and Now?

Then: The artists I admire most from the past are Rembrandt for his skill with lighting. I love the strong highlights and shadows in Rembrandt's paintings. I also love Mary Cassatt. She painted my favorite subject which is children. I love painting children and Mary Cassatt really inspired me with her beautiful work.

Now: I absolutely love Jill Garl's paintings. Jill's work is much more painterly than mine and her work inspires me to become more painterly. Another favorite is Scott Deardorff. Scott's work is perfect; he is extremely detailed in his paintings. There is not one messy brushstroke in his work.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

As my customer base continues to grow I hope at some point to receive notoriety for my work.

What inspired you to become a photographer?

- My husband and my son. I would take my son to get portraits done all the time and one day my husband told me "Just do it yourself, you have a camera." I looked at him funny and thought about it for a minute. A few years, a lot of practice and a two camera upgrades later I started my business in the fall of 2006.

What does your camera gear consist of?

- Canon 5D Mark II, Canon 50mm f/1.2L, Canon 85mm f/1.2L, Canon 100mm f/2.8L IS, Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L, Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L

What are the top 5 things in your studio you just can't live without?

- iMac, Epson 4880 for printing orders (I just LOVE having my images look exactly the way they are supposed to), 85L, Wacom tablet, Drobo

What was the funniest story you have related to photography?

- I don't think I have any funny stories ... except I shot a wedding that was completely pink. And when I mean pink, I mean pink fabric walls and ceiling. It was a white balance nightmare!! Luckily I was second shooting for an amazing friend of mine and didn't have to do the retouching!!

How do you handle your workflow?

- I do most of my processing in Lightroom to adjust for color and density as needed. My clients see their images with the basic retouching in Lightroom. Only ordered images and taken in to Photoshop to be fully retouched and enhanced. It's such a time saver that way and my clients are thrilled with the final result.

If you were on America's Got Talent, what would your talent be?

I love to sing Karaoke so even though I'd get 3 BIG X's in a hurry, I would sing "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" because it is the first song I ever sang at karaoke and I was told it sounded good but I have my doubts!

What inspired you to become a photographer?

Oh the old cliché……my kids. I took my first born to the Picture People three times his first year and thought it was too expensive (HA!) so I decided for his 1 year pictures I would do them. After all, I had a nice SLR and I could do it. Uh, no. So, after lots of rolls of film I got about 6 keepers. That year for Mother’s day (and also my birthday and anniversary) my husband bought me a Canon Digital Rebel XTi. I was awesome! Or so I thought. I took a simple online course on photography that summer and ended up taking pictures of a friend’s little girl. She was almost 2. Well, they gave me $100 and were about the pickiest people ever so I figured if they would pay me, so would others! So, I created a name (which I don’t use anymore), snagged a domain name, designed my own logo, and coded my own website in black and red. I totally put the cart before the horse but thank goodness I learned quickly and learned a lot and have been learning ever since!

What are the top 5 things in your studio you just can't live without?

Well, besides the obvious lights and camera……

My knockoff homemade eyelighter (curved reflector)
My refinished ice cream chair: love this sucker…..great for leaning people on and such
my denny’s freedom cloth drops: desire street, unhinged, and house of pain
my seamless paper
my goofy and irreverent attitude

What was the funniest story you have related to photography?

Oh, there are SO many! Each session is so different and something goofy always happens. I’ve had a mom pretend to pole dance while holding my light for OCF, lent a client a bra when it became clear she was in need (wearing a sports bra with a tight tanktop, not good), lent a client some socks to stuff her prom dress because it was too loose in the bosom and she needed a lift, watching a client come out of a waterfall not once but twice on two separate occasions with soaking wet light colored clothing and a black thong, the day I was buried under a prom dress fluffing it around a stool and making a crack about her not wearing a thong and she said she was……well, let’s just say thong and vinyl stool do not make good friends.

How do you handle your workflow?

My workflow is pretty easy…..I import images into lightroom after each shoot, go through and mark my choices with a *, then I choose three for facebook usually the night of the shoot and process them and put them up. I tweak white balance and all that jazz in lightroom and export to psd to deal with in photoshop where I use MCP eye doctor and some phaunt actions to enhance as I see fit.

If you were on America 's Got Talent, what would your talent be?

Being a dork! Seriously, I just had some clients have a facebook wall chat about how goofy I was and I just can’t help but be silly and funny and a total goof!

I Care For You

A good friend of mine sent this to me
this morning and I thought I
should pass it along.

I was walking around in a Wal-Mart store, when I saw a cashier hand this little boy some money back. The boy couldn't have been more than 5 or 6 years old.

The Cashier said, 'I'm sorry, but you don't have enough money to buy this doll.'

Then the little boy turned to the old woman next to him: ''Granny, are you sure I don't have enough money?''

The old lady replied: ''You know that you don't have enough money to buy this doll, my dear.''

Then she asked him to stay there for just 5 minutes while she went to look around. She left quickly.

The little boy was still holding the doll in his hand. Finally, I walked toward him and I asked him who he wished to give this doll to.

'It's the doll that my sister loved most and wanted so much for Christmas.

She was sure that Santa Claus would bring it to her.'

I replied to him that maybe Santa Claus would bring it to her after all, and not to worry.

But he replied to me sadly. 'No, Santa Claus can't bring it to her where
she is now. I have to give the doll to my mommy so that she can give it to my sister when she goes there.'

His eyes were so sad while saying this. 'My Sister has gone to be with
God. Daddy says that Mommy is going to see God very soon too, so I
thought that she could take the doll with her to give it to my sister.''

My heart nearly stopped.

The little boy looked up at me and said: 'I told daddy to tell mommy not
to go yet. I need her to wait until I come back from the mall.'

Then he showed me a very nice photo of himself. He was laughing. He then
told me 'I want mommy to take my picture with her so she won't forget me.'

'I love my mommy and I wish she didn't have to leave me, but daddy says
that she has to go to be with my little sister.'

Then he looked again at the doll with sad eyes, very quietly.

I quickly reached for my wallet and said to the boy. 'Suppose we check
again, just in case you do have enough money for the doll!''

OK' he said, 'I hope I do have enough.' I added some of my money to his
without him seeing and we started to count it. There was enough for the
doll and even some spare money..

The little boy said: 'Thank you God for giving me enough money!'

Then he looked at me and added, 'I asked last night before I went to
sleep for God to make sure I had enough money to buy this doll, so that
mommy could give it to my sister. He heard me!''

'I also wanted to have enough money to buy a white rose for my mommy, but
I didn't dare to ask God for too much. But He gave me enough to buy the
doll and a white rose.''

'My mommy loves white roses.'

A few minutes later, the old lady returned and I left with my basket.

I finished my shopping in a totally different state of mind from when I started.

I couldn't get the little boy out of my mind.

Then I remembered a local news paper article two days ago, which
mentioned a drunk man in a truck, who hit a car occupied by a young woman
and a little girl.

The little girl died right away, and the mother was left in a critical
state. The family had to decide whether to pull the plug on the
life-sustaining machine, because the young woman would not be able to
recover from the coma.

Was this the family of the little boy?

Two days after this encounter with the little boy, I read in the news
paper that the young woman had passed away.

I couldn't stop myself as I bought a bunch of white roses and I went to
the funeral home where the body of the young woman was for people to see
and make last wishes before her burial.

She was there, in her coffin, holding a beautiful white rose in her hand
with the photo of the little boy and the doll placed over her chest.

I left the place, teary-eyed, feeling that my life had been changed for
ever. The love that the little boy had for his mother and his sister is
still, to this day, hard to imagine.

And in a fraction of a second, a drunk driver had taken all this away from him.

Cherish the time you have with your family and the time others have with theirs.

Don't drink and drive.

Red Velvet Whoopie Pies
YUM YUM
Just in time for Valentines!

Ingredients

For the Cookies:

1 ounce semisweet chocolate, chopped
1/2 ounce milk chocolate, chopped
12 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
1/2 cup sour cream
2 large eggs
1 1/2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 tablespoon red food coloring
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt

For the Filling:

8 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature
3 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature
2 1/2 cups confectioners' sugar, sifted
1 vanilla bean, halved lengthwise and seeds scraped

Directions

Make the cookies: Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Line 2 large baking sheets with parchment paper. Combine the semisweet and milk chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl and microwave at 50 percent power until melted, about 2 minutes. Whisk until smooth.

Whisk the melted butter, sour cream, eggs, vinegar, vanilla and food coloring in a bowl until combined. In another bowl, whisk the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda and salt.

Add the flour mixture to the butter mixture in four equal batches, whisking each batch completely before adding the next. Stir in the melted chocolate.

Scoop heaping tablespoonfuls of batter onto the prepared baking sheets and smooth the tops with a damp finger. Bake until the cookies spring back when lightly pressed, 8 to 10 minutes. Let cool 10 minutes on the baking sheets, then transfer to racks to cool completely.

Meanwhile, make the filling: Beat the cream cheese and butter with a mixer until smooth. Beat in the confectioners' sugar and vanilla seeds. Sandwich a heaping tablespoonful of filling between 2 cookies; repeat with the remaining cookies and filling. Refrigerate 30 minutes before serving.

Crock Pot Hot Fruit Dessert
Good by itself or with ice cream or pound cake.

3		grapefruit, peeled and sectioned
1	can	mandarin orange sections, drained (11 oz.)
1	can	fruit cocktail, well drained (16 oz.)
1	can	pineapple chunks, well drained (20 oz.)
1	can	sliced peaches, well drained (16 oz.)
3		bananas, sliced
1	tbsp.	lemon juice
1	can	cherry pie filling (21 oz.)

Place all ingredients in cooker.
Toss gently.
Cover and cook on low about 4 hours.
Makes about 2 quarts.

Mama's Chicken Stew

1	lb.	skinned, boned chicken breasts, cut into bite-size pieces
1	lb.	skinned, boned chicken thighs, cut into bite-size pieces
2	c.	water
1	c.	frozen small whole onions
1	c.	sliced celery (1/2 inch)
1	c.	thinly sliced carrot
1	tsp.	paprika
1/2	tsp.	salt
1/2	tsp.	rubbed sage
1/2	tsp.	dried thyme
1/2	tsp.	black pepper
1	can	fat-free chicken broth (141/4 ounce)
2	c.	halved mushrooms
1	can	tomato paste (6 ounce)
1/4	c.	water
3	tbsp.	cornstarch
2	c.	frozen green peas

Combine first 14 ingredients in a large electric slow cooker. Cover with lid, and cook on high-heat setting for 4 hours or until carrot is tender. Combine water and cornstarch in a small bowl, stirring with a whisk until blended. Add cornstarch mixture and peas to slow cooker; stir well. Cover and cook on high-heat setting an additional 30 minutes.

Yield: 8 1 1/2 cup servings

Marinated Chicken Wings
2 doz. chicken wings
5 oz. bottle soy sauce
2 tbsp. brown sugar
1 tsp. Dijon mustard
1/2 tsp. garlic powder

Cut chicken wings in half. Marinate in remaining mixture for 1/2 hour. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour or until marinate is thick. Turn once. Serves 6 to 10. COMMENT: May be frozen in marinade. Bake after defrosting.

Spiced Fruit Cobbler
4 cans or 1 qt. fruit
1 tsp. nutmeg
1 tsp. cinnamon
2 tbsp. sugar
1 pkg. white cake mix
1 1/2 c. water
2 eggs

Place drained fruit slices in bottom of Dutch oven.
Sprinkle with spices and sugar.
Blend cake mix, water and eggs.
Pour over fruit mixture.
Cover and cook 25-35 minutes at 350 degrees.

This is so yummy....

Mexican Meatloaf
1 1/2 to 2 lb. your favorite ground
meat (beef, pork turkey, etc.)
1 c. oatmeal, cracker crumbs or bread
crumbs
1/2 to 3/4 c. mild picante sauce
(chunky style works well)
1 egg
Salt and pepper to taste

If needs moistening, add some tomato juice or try V-8. Mix ingredients together, shape into loaf and put in pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour, or until the loaf is firm. Serve with potatoes or rice and corn or cornbread.

A Sad Day for A Fellow Photographer

I met Char a few years ago when
she asked me to design a logo for her.
I have seen her work grow so much and
all I can say is that she is a truly gifted artist.

What inspired you to become a photographer?

Actually, I have always just loved pictures. You name it…all kinds - especially old photos. The business part came full-circle when I had my two little boys and wanted to take my own photos. It just went from there.

What does your camera gear consist of?

(2) Canon 5D Mark II (one for back-up)

70-200 2.8L IS

24-70 2.8L

100mm 2.8 macro

(2) Alien Bee 800's

What are the top 5 things in your studio you just can't live without?

My giant soft box
Seamless paper
My on-going chair collection
My iPod touch

My hat & blanket collection

What is the strangest thing that has ever happened to you or your client during a session?

I would have to say when I was shooting this gorgeous senior downtown Jackson and a fire truck stopped and the fireman gets out and asks if I shot weddings... because he was looking for one. We had just had a policeman stop a street over to see if we needed anything. Did I mention she was gorgeous? Kind of makes you wonder....

Has there been any other photographer's that have inspired you and why?

Yes! Cindy Dover and Natalie Bacon! Two of my favorites.... I love working with Seniors and those two totally rock it!!! They have got the posing down to an art! I have to say they are my inspiration. They are both great people, always helpful and super sweet!

Interview with the talented Maggie Davenport

What inspired you to become a photographer?

My interest in photography came from being a lover art. I used to draw a lot, but as I grew older my interests began to change with the digital age. I love to draw and sculpt as well, even though I haven't had much of a chance to do either of those things as much! I still draw up all of my templates and set ideas before creating or shooting it. I am a lover of computers as well and with the advancement of technology an entire new way of creating art was opened to me and I have been "squeeing" since!

What does your camera gear consist of?

I am still shooting with my trusty Canon Rebel XTI with grip and I am still a firm believer of it's the knowledge of the equipment rather than the equipment itself that matters. I shoot with my nifty fifty, and I love to rent the 24-70mm 2.8L and 85mm 1.2L. I also have a 580ex and 2AB800 and some softboxes and barn doors.

What are the top 5 things in your studio you just can't live without?

1. My giant softbox from Paul C Buff.
2. My wicker basket!
3. A heating pad.
4. Tile Board.
5. My faux fur rug from Wal-mart!

What is the strangest thing that has ever happened to you or your client during a session?

During a session I once had a man walk up and say "You would fit right in with my brothel." At first I was completely flabbergasted until he explained that he owned a building that was ONCE a brothel that they were turning into a museum of sorts and it was their open house. So me and the model I was shooting went in, drank some wine, ate some food, and shot at one of the coolest locations I have ever shot at to this date.

Has there been any other photographer's that have inspired you and why?

I am inspired daily by my fellow photogs at all the forums I haunt! Lately I have been loving everything that Audra Buchanan at http://www.audrasphotographysite.com/ has been doing! Her tones and colors are to die for and I love her wedding work! Also, Hope Brown from http://www.hopebrown.com/ I love her lighting, she makes everything look so natural and tends to have the most adorable props!

What inspired you to become a photographer?
LOVE OF PICTURES!
I love to look at pictures, anyone's. I've been a scrapbooker for about 12 years and I wanted to learn the art of photography. So, I picked up a camera and started studying.

What does your camera gear consist of?
Nikon D700 is my main body, I have a D300 and the D70 as backups. D70 usually houses my fisheye lens. I have the 24-70 and 70-200 lenses as my main workhorses, the 60mm macro for ring shots and the 50mm 1.8 for fun.

What are the top 5 things in your studio you just can't live without?
I don't have a studio space, but those items I love are as follows: (1) the D700, what a GREAT camera, (2) the WhiBal card for whitebalance, (3) my 5 in 1 reflector/diffuser, (4) my Sunpack video light and (5) the sun! (when it's not available, the SB800 is a great little item to have along.

What is the strangest thing that has ever happened to you or your client during a session? Other photographers getting angry with me. I don't understand why there are photographers that are willing to share and help other photographers - then there are those that act like you are their enemy and they don't want you to even look their way.

Has there been any other photographer's that have inspired you and why?
Yes, tons of people inspire me. I love to look at the art produced by David Beckstead. Jaco Fourier in South Africa has some of the most amazing wedding images I've ever seen. I love how Susan Stripling uses the light and Tim Schooler absolutely ROCKS senior portraits.

Sister Update 3

I hope everyone is having a great weekend!

I went to visit my sister, Kristi, yesterday
and she looks good. She is slowly getting used to
the pumps and is really anxious about going home.
When she is at 100%, she will be added back onto
the heart transplant list since the pumps are only
a short term fix. We are hoping by that time as well
that she will be able to go home and wait there
for a heart.

Her kiddos spent 10 days with me and we
had fun together playing games, going to the movies
and swimming. My daughter especially loved having
her cousins around the house. Cousins are more
fun then mommy's and daddy's I guess. :)

While the kiddos were all here, I took pics of them....
as usual!

Sister Update 2

Thank you all so much again for your prayers.
Kristi had to have the heart pumps put in
on Thursday last week.
Her heart was too weak to beat on its own
so the pumps are doing it for her now.
She will still need a heart transplant so please
keep your fingers crossed for her and her family.

Her kiddos ages 3 ,4 , 7 and 11 are hanging out with me for a few
weeks and we plan on making cool things for their mom to
decorate her room with.

I am still going to honor the Sisterhood Fundraisers Sale
for those of you that missed out on the first one.

Sister Update

Thank you all so much for your
support and prayers.
So many have donated and I truly appreciate it.

The bad news is that my sister took a dive
for the worse. Her heart was damaged too much
from the virus called Myocarditis and she is now
in need of a heart transplant.
Currently she is in the ICU awaiting one.
We now wait minute by minute for the call
that there is one available for her.
With her age and being a mother of four,
she is top priority on the list.
I think the hardest part is waiting.

The fundraiser sale ends today so

Sisterhood Fundraiser

This last Friday morning, I received a
call that my older sister had to be rushed to
the hospital because of a possible heart attack.
The thought of my sister not being here
scared me. She is only 34 years old.
She is married and has four young children at home that
really need her.

As of today, she is looking and feeling much
better. Her heart is doing good but she will be
staying in the hospital for at least a week.

So instead of a freebie this week,
